The Liz Tilberis Series: Beauty Features

While you were flipping through the August 2012 issue Of Marie Claire (on the right), you admired the berry lip-stained, wavy haired beach vamp.
You instantly were reminded of another berry lip-stained, wavy haired beach vamp.
At first you couldn't believe the similarities. Then you realized the resemblance between the current day issue in your hands and a Carolyn Murphy photographed by Carter Smith in the August 1998 Harper's Bazaar (on the left) could not be denied.
You are not crazy, because I had the exact same thoughts too.

Prints can be tricky.
Prints can overwhelm the subject, or date an outfit to a specific era.
It is unexpected when a print comes along to impress the senses, especially more than one a season.
I have been falling in love with designer's images all summer long.
My new favorite is the the 'Circus Circus' Print from the SS 2012 Dries Van Noten Collection.
I couldn't be more excited original James Reeve photos found their way from the DVN runway into my closet.  A piece of art I can wear so easily.

My one-of-a-kind Michael Ruta vintage keyhole necklace set with petite blue sapphires.
A work of art in every sense.

Like that pose!? Take note of the swing shape of the top.  Perfect proportions of oversize and boxy.

Surface #95

Fashion is art.
Because what else is to see besides the 3.1 Phillip Lim PVC and gold clutch?
The hot pink pony hair McQueen clutch?
You bet.

Attempted to make it to the Roy Lichtenstein Retrospective at the Art Institute today.
Really only made it as far as Monroe & Michigan, and was inspired nonetheless.

It is my most cherished fashion image.
A rare page of a magazine I carefully cut out to tack, tape, pin, glue to any surface, which was serving as my inspiration board at the time.
I live and breathe this photo.
I just love the movement.  The swing of Guinevere's pant legs caught in mid-step.
I love the air of her shoulders.  She needs to be somewhere but she is in no rush.
I love its candid vibe.

Guinevere Van Seenus for Jil Sander (ad campaign, 96 or 97)

It is casual and aloof at the same time it is confident and strong.
The perfect study of androgyny and minimalism.
For me this is my blueprint of style.
This is my candid vibe.

The Liz Tilberis Series: February 1995 VS. June/July 2012

I am behind on keeping up with magazines.
I am only half way through the March issues, and its July.
There was one exception.
Because I love the cover of the June/July Harper's Bazaar (Kate Moss?  In the middle of the ocean? Awesome.), I flipped through it's pages on the way up the stairs to my apartment.
I stopped dead in my tracks as soon as the pages of 'What's Chic Right Now' fell open.
Stark, minimal.
The photos let the menswear inspired styling do all the talking.
Exactly everything I want to wear, all the time.
Exactly everything I have wanted to wear for decades.  Ever since the blonde darling of the 90's, Amber Valletta, slouched and smoldered for photographers during the golden era of stark and minimal.
I realized while studying the pages of today's Bazaar, how lucky I am to have learned the fundamentals of fashion from Liz Tilberis.
Most importantly I learned stark and minimal will always be 'right now'.

The Liz Tilberis Series: February 1994

Possibly the most influential pages of a magazine on my personal style.
It is the editorial which taught me 'sportswear' does not mean 'sports' and short hair does not mean 'boy'.
It is simple. It is sleek.  This is Summer Styling 101.
I often imagine asking Liz Tilberis (if I ever had the chance) if she saw some of herself in the editorials she approved for Harper's Bazaar.  I would let her know I saw a whole lot of myself in this one.
To a T.
